augh!

Things will be quiet today as I'm trying to get this scanner that my brother gave me installed and it's not going very well.

I'm thinking the right tools for the job just might be a hammer and a credit card.

LOL

I have 3 and none of them work...:\

Note to anyone buying a scanner - DO NOT buy a HP scanner...

Ack, that's what this is.
I was all psyched up to start scanning things, too.

Bah.

I had one that wasn't supported by XP Professional. Gave up -- used the hammer in lieu of the credit card.

I have an HP and it hooked up easily and has worked fine ever since.

I think XP is the killer. I'm getting hubby to go back to Windows NT, but I have to move all my 'keanufiles' first...LOL

Hmm....Windows and it's driver issues. Ever thought of getting a Mac? ;-)

Mine works great with XP, man I must be lucky with this HP.(watch me jinx myself now.) ;)
I just remember plugging the right cords into the right places, installing the software, clicking on the scanner icon, and scan away.
krix what model is it?

I would love to try a Mac, but no one I know has one for me to play with. I'm stuck with a PC at the office anyway.

The scanner is an OLD one, a 5100c. The cable is a parallel port and the only thing it fits is my printer port and the computer (which is a little funky configuration-wise itself) refuses to even admit that there is something other than the printer there, and I don't want to force the bastard or I fear I'll never get the printer going again. And it's a work machine so I can't really do that.

At least Roi has a working scanner and if I really need to I can take stuff to his house.

I think XP is the DEVIL!!! My scanner/printer/fax/copier has NEVER worked at all with it and I can't print anything now....and all those beaut pics that krix puts out...:o(

"XP is the Devil"

Ain't dat da truth LOL

If you are coming in through your printer port, than your computer thinks the scanner is a printer. Try setting it to a different LPT port from the main set up file (or go through the wizard, but if you have an old one, you might need to do it manually). If you get totally stuck and frustrated, email me. :)

I only have the one parallel/printer port. It's an old machine, that has a bizarre hardware configuration because of what it was previously used for. And even if I can get the machine to recognize the scanner, I still need the printer, which would involve having to switch the port manually every time?
Feh.
I think I'll just take stuff over to Roi's for now. I really don't have a lot to scan.
Thank you though, Amphora.

HP has always been the best IMO; I don't think it's the scanner but the bizarreness of the config, as you describe it, etc. HP has always been reliable and produced great quality scans for me, and I've used it in my business, for, like... *decades*.
