Truth, Justice & the Hollywood Way

Some news about another possible new role for Keanu...

Filmforce.IGN - Neo or Aragorn as Superman?

December 18, 2003 - IGN FilmForce has learned the latest on Truth, Justice & the American Way, Focus Features' long-planned biopic of the late Superman star George Reeves. The Allen Coulter-directed project is aiming to begin filming in Los Angeles this March or April. Location scouting, production design work, and casting are currently underway.
[...]
And who might portray George Reeves? Hugh Jackman, Ben Affleck, and Dennis Quaid have all been approached for the part at different times. Now Keanu Reeves has met with Coulter about the lead. Should the Matrix star pass then Viggo Mortensen (Lord of the Rings) might be offered the role.

I've never been hip on the idea of Keanu playing Superman, but this new twist intrigues me...

Playing the man who played Superman.

That cancels out the curse, right?

Well, As a Superman fan, sometimes I imagine Keanu as Superman. I think that he has that innocent look that Clark/Superman must have...:) Anyway, to play the man who always was identified as Supes, who had an intriguing life and a mysterious death, can be so much more challenging for Keanu as an actor, as a serious, mature and tragic role... In that site there's a script review and seems very dramatical and interesting.

I would love to see Keanu play George Reeves. I just love watching Keanu period. Though it is announced on IMDB.com that Keanu is to star in that movie Tripoli (which is also a biopic)with Ben Kingsley. Does anyone know anything further on that movie?

Ale, I agree..I grew up watching George Reeves as Superman, and although to look back on it now, it looks tremendously silly, to a 5-year old he was my first Hero. As I got older, I continued my interest in Superman comics until of course that became So Uncool (probably junior high).

I've always had a tremendous soft spot for Superman, part of the reason why I adored all the Superman references in the Matrix films. And learning about the tragedies in George Reeves's life...yes it would be interesting to have a film about this.

I'm in two minds about Keanu being in it, though. Any Keanu is good Keanu, but... the last name thing, the Superman curse, the tragic life... I dunno..it kinda creeps me out in some way.

So persuade me otherwise *grin*... After SGG and that Action! clip, I'd love to see more comedy from Keanu, myself. But dramatic realistic roles, yeah I'd like to see those too.

Hi:)

Well, you know, I don't believe so much in that "curse" thing about Superman, but I believe that the actors involved with it are , in a certain way, special ones... I still believe that Keanu would be an incredible Clark Kent and a super power high-octane-sexy-GOD Super! :)

But, I don't know, Keanu seems now to be inclined for more denser and mature roles, with more range (sp?)... We know that he has so much power in Hollywood now to do better movies, to work with more quality scripts, and it's what we can comprove with the next projects for wich he is being considered. If he is up to do that movie, we have: Constantine (really a dark and dense character), that Superman biopic and Tripoli, another mature and powerful role.

Well, I did not see SGG - here where I live, only in March I will be able to see Dr Julian :( - but for what I am reading, the great reviews and commentaries regarding his performance, I think that it was a wonderful step in his career. After two Matrix movies, he came with a total different role right after, so gentle and sweet, and surprised his critics, who cannot contest his versatility. That gives more possibilities to him to make different things, that's what he likes to do.

I don't know about the idea of a Superman role for him?? I would love to see Keanu in a historical or a political film that allows him to explore a wider range of his acting ability. His role in SGG for instance was very refreshing and quite different. So he is developing and maturing as an actor. I can see him in a movie like Tripoli if indeed he is a part of it or has the lead? He is a very intelligent actor who has command of his craft and is quite conscious about choosing film themes and characters he plays. He also seems to be interested in how they translate on screen and what they mean.

I took the picture off of this post because along with being kinda stupid, it may have confused the issue.

This would be playing George Reeves, the man who played Superman, not the Man of Steel character. And as Ale mentions, if you read about the script, it sounds fascinating.

I don't know if I believe in the curse or not. If there is a curse, maybe it was George himself that started it, and if the truth about the events surrounding his death comes to light, maybe it will be lifted? OK, I'll put my Oujia board away now.

It was a little creepily distracting reading about the script when they just started to referring to him as just "Reeves".

I remember a gentleman in the Tonight Show audience once asked him on the air if he was related to George Reeves or Christopher Reeve (well duh, no), and he kind of winced and said "No."

With the volume of scripts he is probably getting now, this is one of the mountain. Just like Billy Jack, the Ottoman Empire and few others, whether anything comes of it remains to be seen. They may just be throwing his name out there, along with the other actors on the list, to drum up interest in their production.

I confess that I had never read about George Reeves life, although I knew about the suicide, et al. But reading Stax script review (http://filmforce.ign.com/articles/371/371376p1.html?fromint=1) and the article about his life and death... WOW! What a fantastic movie can be made. His story is so glorious and sad at same time, has that old Hollywwod aura, with lovers, jealousy, accidents. Read the article and see.

It would be an extremely challenging role for Keanu, I think it fits with this new phase of his career, and can really show the range of his acting ability. I can see he totally pull it off.

Wow...yes, after reading that script review..it sounds terrific, unless it's been changed quite a bit with a new director. And yes, IF it ends up being made as well as the script sounded in 2002, it would be a terrific role for Keanu. *smile* loved the stuff in the review about 50s kids and will be very curious to see if they've kept that in the current script.

Although I still find the last name thing weird.

SO keanu is discusing the possibilty of portraying George Reeves' life?....That would be interesting! Since he never wanted to take Superman! I'd be looking forward to that!
