I came into fandom with "SPEED", so it will always have a special place in my heart. I saw it two weeks after it premiered, June 10, 1994, and my life hasn't been the same since. Its classified in the "action genre", but I view it from a different perspective. First, I think it's a romance. Its broad-based female appeal is not just because of Keanu's overpowering physical beauty (I killed my pause button on my remote), but because of the empowering relationship between Jack and Annie. If this movie had been made five years earlier, Jack (a la Arnold and Sly) would have commandeered the steering wheel from Annie so fast, she'd have spent the rest of the movie in the passenger seat picking bus tokens out of her teeth. Jack's "cool" and Annie's "hot" energy made the screen's sexual tension snap, crackle, and I popped! While they were on the bus they seemed to have an equal partnership, despite the fact that Jack still had the gun. However, once they got off the bus, Annie seemed to morph into the traditional "damsel in distress", replete with dynamite around her chest and chained helplessly to a pole. Perhaps that is one reason I liked the first half of the movie better. SPEED seemed to capture the zeitgeist of the times as an allegory for today's working class families: man and woman protecting their family (the passengers) against the tremendous burdens and scary circumstances of a fast-paced society, with fifty foot gaps in their way.
Like "Last of the Mohicans" (in which I ran through forests for two hours with Daniel Day Lewis), SPEED left me breathless, unlike any rush hour I've sat through!
I especially loved all the promos. My favorites were the interviews from overseas. Do you remember the one from England, where Keanu had to answer 25 questions in 30 seconds or the hotel would blow up? Or the one from Germany, where Keanu was strapped to a lie-detector machine and asked a series of questions? Or how about the Japanese one where they showed Keanu a tape of Jan DeBont talking about Keanu's good looks, and Keanu blushing as he watched? In 1994 I figured Keanu would be my summer fantasy, my "Krispy Kreme" treat. Well, it's eight years later, and I'm still hanging out in the donut shop!
Doesn't time fly when you're having fun!
I've forgotten how many time I've seen SPEED. It never loses it's flava and has me gripping my armchair everytime I watch it.
And of course Keanu is a honey in this movie, so manly with his big 'ol muscles, yet gentle and caring, putting others first.
I loved Sandra Bullock in this movie. She was great as Annie. I couldn't imagine any other actress doing the part.
I was very surprised to hear that Halle Berry turned this down. I would have loved to have seen her and Keanu do a movie together [I may one day get my wish...].
The newly released Special Edition DVD of SPEED is outstanding. I love the deleted scenes and understand why they weren't used. It would have made Jack a bit of a wuss in terms of his relationship with his DAD. The dialogue wasn't required for the character set up.
And I get to see Keanu dancing again *yeeeeah!*
The photo gallery is excellent as are the multiple angled stunt sequences.
The Billy Idol video of 'SPEED' has me jumping about, singing as loud as I can...LOL
My favourite bit of all is Mark Gordon and Graham Yost just gushing about their movie and saying nice things about Keanu ['look at his muscles'..LOL].
Bravo to a rollercoaster of a movie and to the DVD [even if a little over due...]
Posted by: Keanuette on June 17, 2002 12:09 PMI absolutely love this movie! Sandra Bullock is my favorite American actress, and Keanu is just wonderful in this, too! :) The romantic aspect is wonderful!!
Posted by: Kelly Poor on December 14, 2002 08:00 AMdon`t you just love the way keanu`s chewing that gum at the bigining of the movie?:>...and the look on his face when he goes under the buss...and the way he closes his eyes when kissing Annie at the end of the movie...there is a god!:>...
Posted by: Cristina on March 15, 2003 10:07 AMI found the movie to be sometimes boring and un-motorvational. I would like to know how the movie was made and why they used 12 different buses to make the movie compared to one.
I would like to now a little more on the movie and the actors them self. I thought that (Annie) played by Sandra Bullock was a tad dramatic and spent more time paying attention to the passengers on the bus then the road it self.
Posted by: Christopher Paquette on March 18, 2003 10:23 PMKeanu Reeves started something in Speed. If I remember correctly, he is actually the first hero who actually *looks* like a SWAT team member. The way he holds the gun, steady and accurate, unlike some heroes who could have a shoot themselves in the foot. His hair, short and tidy, needed in his line of works, and best of all, his muscles and biceps. He looks like his character, and that is the damm good compliment anybody can give.
Speed is the movie that started a trend in Hollywood. You gotta hold the gun properly. And you got to get the hair done (Tom Cruise in Mission Impossible anyone?). So yea, maybe over the years it will detoriate, but heck, it was also the movie that shoot Sandra Bullock into the mainstream. And that's good enough for me.
Posted by: Anduril on May 19, 2003 10:14 PMI got this out of the video store once, and i immediatly went out and bought it,
...with money i was supposed to buy clothes with.
(boy was my mum mad!)
Oh, his goddam arms in this...oh!
*shoot the hostage, take him out of the equation*
Sorry, im a speed fool.
Well, now i have to watch the dvd now, don't i?
HE DANCES?
wow. i really have to watch that.
I recommed to anyone who hasn't seen it, that they should definatley go and watch it. NOW!
It's definatley on eof the best movies ever, next to the matrix trilogies.
Posted by: martha on August 15, 2003 02:29 AMI loved Speed. I loved Sandra in this movie. The scenes were great. I have to disagree about the chemistry between Sandra and Keanu. Like the Matrix 1, I felt all the jonesing was on the part of the chick, he looked like he was "just doing my job, ma'am". This was the first Reeves film I saw where he was the hero and I was blown away by how well he projects the image of the loner - the walls around him were almost physical.
Posted by: Sunny on August 25, 2003 03:05 PMI LOVE Keanu Reeves. He's the best actor. It's so cool how he plays Jack Traven in Speed. He does his own stunts, ya' know! Also, I watched Speed 17 times. He really dances in the DVD???? I never knew that. I gotta get that DVD!!!! :)
