Can't get the
enhancements
On Quattro Formaggi to work ?*

The problem may be Windows 95 'B'. If you've upgraded your windows to version 'B' there is a problem with one of the virtual device drivers. the updated driver file scsi1hlp.vxd is faulty somehow and thus your computer does not recognize the disc as having a data portion, only an audio portion. to fix this problem, you must 'downgrade' this file to the original windows 'A' version. this will allow the data portion of the disc to be recognized and the enhanced CD program will run.

A couple things:
I used this fix on my machine running Windows 98 and it worked fine. I don't know if it will work with newer (like ME, XP or 2000) versions of windows.
A general rule to follow is if you EVER go messing with system files, always, ALWAYS put a copy of the original file into a temporary folder so if something goes wrong, you can restore it.

Anyway, here's what you do:

  • Download the zip file scsi1hlp.zip to your computer.
  • Unzip it.
  • Copy the OLD scsi1hlp.vxd file
    (found in
c:\windows\system\iosubsys\  folder) to a temporary folder.
  • Paste the NEW , unzipped, scsi1hlp.vxd file into the c:\windows\system\iosubsys\  folder.
  • Rebooting your machine here couldn't hurt. I think I did.
  • Put the QF CD in your CD ROM drive and follow the installation instructions--Also, it will make you change your display settings to 256 colors. You do that in your Control Panel/Display thingy. (You can change it back when you are done playing around with the CD.)
  • There may be more rebooting involved here, I really can't remember.

One more thing, if you aren't comfortable messing with your files, don't do this. This fixed worked for me, but there's no guarantees. It SHOULDN'T do anything bad to your computer, but if it does, I'm NOT RESPONSIBLE, OK? I'm more or less passing on this info. Use this fix at your own risk.

one side note:
This fix won't help if the problem is an incompatible cd-rom drive.
I don't know what to tell you.
***Update 10/13/02 Here's a note from kat of my-single-mom-life that might be of help to anyone using WINME. "about the quattro cd fix. I did it the way you said to and it didn't work. but then, I unzipped the new file and pasted it in iosubsystems and then restarted my puter and then installed the cd. it worked just fine and I didnt even have to change the colors. I am on Windows ME and I got it to work finally (after like 7 months of f'ken with it every couple of weeks). Anyway, just thought I'd share another way to get it to work if peeps are still having trouble getting it to work. "
Thanks KAT!

*This information is from a page for a band called Treble Charger. I guess they had the same problem with their enhanced CD. They used to have a page with this fix online, but I checked and it is no longer available, which is why I made this page.
They still have a site out there at www.treblecharger.com.
Feel free to go give them love.
I don't know who made that original page, but a HUGE THANKS from MANY Dogstar fans goes out to them. Also, credit should be given to Mary Jo, who originally pointed out that fix page to me and other fans a while back.
